In this book essay, Professor Khalaf re-examines four encounters with change the peasant uprising of 1820, the Egyptian occupation of 1831-41, the Ottoman Reforms of 1838 and 1857, and the Mutesarrifate of Mount Lebanon, 1860-190 in an attempt to reappraise their impact on concrete instances of behavioral and structural change. The book challenges the alleged universality of some of the prominent theoretical models for the analysis of modernization in newly developing countries and provides evidence to support the dialectical, rather than the polemical or disjunctive, character of tradition and modernity.
