Ameen Rihani was born in Freike, Lebanon, November 23, 1876. He was sent to America with his uncle in the summer of 1888. Few months after his arrival, he went to a school outside New York, where he started to learn the English language. During his successive studies he made the aquaintance of the poets and writers, Shakespeare, Hugo, Spencer, Husley, Carlyle and other of his days and of old. In 1898 he came back to his native country, Lebanon, where he taught English in a clerical school and studied Arabic, his mother tongue in return. In 1903, in New York, he rendered into English, in a book form, a selected number of poems of the Arab poet-Philosopher Abu'l-Ala Al-Maari. Since the he dedicated himself to writing. 1904, Rihani came back to Lebanon and in the mountain solitude wrote in both English and Arabic.
