The book was written in 1018 by Al-Biruni during his journey as a political prisoner from his native Khwarazm to the capital of the Ghaznavid Empire in modern Afghanistan. Its primary objective is a determination of the geographical position of this city with respect to Baghdad and Mecca, thereby to calculate the direction of Muslim prayer from Ghazna.
