This study is concerned with the poetry of al-Abbas b. al-Ahnaf (d.804) who was a highly reputed poet at the court of Harun ar-Rashid and whose poetry is considered to be the peak in the historical evolution of the Ghazal. Unlike other poets, al Abbas poetry is not always congruent with the story of his life. By studying his biography, he is revealed as a Fata and a Zarif. Therefore, the study identifies two patterns of behavior, Futuwwa and Zarf and compares them to the biography of al-Abbas on one hand and his poetry on the other. The main part of this study highlights the poet’s role in reinventing the poetry of Ghazal through Zarf
