No single answer to this question exists and there may never be one. Some observes attribute it to the legacy of his trial and brutal execution, others to the controversial life he led and his absolute devotion to his cause, and other still to the originality of his ideas. There is a modicum of truth in each of those explanations. In truth, however, his literary popularity is due to two reasons: (first) the enduring relevancy of his ideas and (second) the broad spectrum of his thought. An appreciation of these reasons demands a careful analysis. The present volume is the final (though by no means definitive) result of a work that began some years ago to address this deficiency.
